First there was the vote, and Thursday, Stephen Hill accepted the American Planning Association’s Great Historic Rehabilitation award at the Sand in the Streets event.
Kinston City Planner Adam Short nominated the project entry – The O’Neil hotel – which beat the next-closest project, the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter, by more than 6,000 votes.
“It’s very nice to be recognized by the association for the greatest historic restoration in North Carolina for the last year,” Hill said. “It’s really because of all the people here – the community and the students, the schools, and everything – they voted for The O’Neil, and that’s what pushed us over Winston-Salem.”
Hill said the community support that pushed The O’Neil for the win is greatly appreciated, and he called the building “a shining beacon for the city’s future.”
